Why Can’t I Get Motivated?! 3 Ways to Build Momentum for Entrepreneurs

“Why can’t I get motivated?!” I hear this all the time from entrepreneurs.

We all have days where we don’t feel like doing anything, which is especially challenging when you are just starting to build a business and see a long road ahead of you. So what gives? Where do successful people find the motivation to do all the things?!

Well, I am going to give it to you straight my friend… The difference between you and them is that you’re focusing on the wrong “M” word.

See, waiting for motivation to start the thing is like putting the cart before the horse, it just doesn’t work that way.

The “M” word you’re looking for is MOMENTUM!

“Why Can’t I Get Motivated?!” – Forget Motivation – You Need Momentum.

Merriam-Webster defines motivation as, a force or influence that causes someone to do something.”

So let’s say, for example, you saw someone’s beautiful website and you suddenly feel a bit of motivation to start working on yours. You probably work on it for a little while, but then you put it aside and wait for the next time motivation hits and suddenly it’s been a month and you haven’t even opened your site again.

The thing is, motivation brings about short bursts of energy, but there is nothing sustainable here. Once you use that energy for working on your website, you have to wait for the next external push to bring you another short burst, and so on and so on.

On the other hand, Merriam-Webster defines momentum as “the strength or force that allows something to continue or to grow stronger or faster as time passes”

So, going back to the example of building your website, let’s say you schedule 5min on Monday after lunch to do one thing on your site. This leads to the next thing, which and the next, as the momentum builds. The energy isn’t expended, it continues to grow, exponentially!

The momentum creates the motivation.

How to build MOMENTUM

1) Start Small

Building momentum is easy and sustainable because all you need is a small push. You don’t need to wait for some magically motivational speech to get you going. You just need to take ONE step.

I find the easiest way to do this is to schedule it. Trying to build momentum to work on figuring out your ideal client? Schedule 1 min with your coffee to jot down some ideas.

Want to build momentum to work on your business plan, schedule 5min after dinner to look over what you have done and add one thing.

Looking for momentum to exercise every morning? Put your gym clothes on when you get out of the shower.

Momentum to meditate? Sit for 1 minute after your workout.

This works because starting is over half of the battle, and when you’re only committing to one minute a day, no motivation is required. Anyone can do anything for one minute a day!

Very quickly you’ll see the momentum speed up and suddenly you’ll be WANTING to schedule more time! No more asking “Why Can’t I Get Motivated?!”

What is ONE thing you can schedule for tomorrow to get the ball rolling?

2) Stack Habits

If you read the ideas I gave above, you will notice that I gave each action a specific when. 1min with your coffee, 5min after, when you get out of the shower, after your workout.

Once your brain has built a strong network of neurons to support a habit, you can leverage that network and add to it to create new habits. You use the completion of one habit as the cue for the next. This is called habit stacking.

Say you already have a habit of going for a run when you wake up, you can use arriving home as your cue to sit down and meditate, or you can use finishing your meditation as your cue to write in your journal, and so forth.

This is building on the momentum of the things you are already doing. So again, no motivation is needed!

3) Know Your Why

All new entrepreneurs have their reasons for wanting to start a business. In the beginning, most of these include more money, more things, or more family time.

However, if you practice gratitude for what you already have and focus on creating a business that is driven by your desire to provide value to your customers, rather than on what you will gain, you’ll create a business that’s more rewarding for you AND you’ll attract abundance, building momentum in the process.

You need to understand why you’re building a business in the first place so that when your mind tries to play tricks on you and keep you looking at the past for signs things aren’t going to work out, you have your why there turning your gaze forward.

What value are you creating and how is it going to benefit those around you, your community, and the world at large?

Write it down, post it around your house, and watch the momentum grow.

Final Thoughts

New entrepreneurs seem to be consistently asking, “Why Can’t I Get Motivated?!”.

If this is you and you want that elusive “motivation” to kick in, start with something small and watch the momentum you build magically morph into motivation.

It’s not motivation you need, it’s momentum.
