What is the Best Morning Routine for Busy Entrepreneurs?
Sarah Mae (SMae) |

What is the Best Morning Routine? Sorry, I am afraid there is no such thing.
Which is what bothers me SO MUCH about morning routines. Everyone is out there claiming that THEIR routine is going to make you successful. Like they’ve figured out the secret sauce of entrepreneurship, and it’s the specific morning routine they’ve got going.
I call bullsh*t.
So why am I writing a blog post on the topic? Great question. While I do not believe there is a “BEST” morning routine, I do believe there is value in creating one for yourself. So today, I’m sharing the benefits of having a morning routine, tips to create yours, and some habits I like to include in mine for some inspiration.
If you’ve been struggling to create a routine that works, or are just feeling bombarded with all the information out there, this post is for you.

Why Bother With A Morning Routine
From the moment you wake up, your mind is flooded with all the things you need to do. This makes it so easy to just get to work by checking our emails. It is even worse if you work from home, which most of us do now, and you can just shuffle to your desk in your PJs.
However, before you know it half of the day has passed and you still haven’t put pants on.
Mornings like this can lead to stress, poor sleep, poor mental and physical health, and loss of productivity.
On the other hand, having a solid morning routine ensures that you start the day off stress-free and in control of your time.
I like to think of it as the foundation I build the rest of my day on top of.
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.

How to Start Creating Your Best Morning Routine
1) Have a Morning Mantra
Understanding why you’re doing something is important for anything you want to accomplish in life and business. You need to know why you should care.
Why do you want to have a morning routine?
Maybe you want to improve your health, experience less stress, or write a book. Whatever it is, define it first and turn it into a mantra that you can use as motivation to start every day.
My objective is: “To have a daily morning routine that gives me so much energy and balance to start my day.”
My mantra is: “There is a relaxed and effortless flow to my days.”

2) Do Some Investigating
Once you know your objective, you can start learning how to structure your mornings to achieve it.
Having the energy for my days is really important for me. So I spent quite a bit of time searching for the best morning practices that will increase my energy.
This involved looking at what other successful entrepreneurs are doing, reading books and articles, and experimenting.

3) Start Small
The biggest mistake people make when trying to create new habits and routines is trying to make big changes overnight.
It works for a day or two, and then you miss once and suddenly it’s been a few weeks and you’ve forgotten all about it.
To prevent this from happening, start small and build up to where you want to be.
I did this with my morning meditations. I started with 1min meditations, and I gradually added more minutes until 20min became easy and sustainable.
🖋️ What is the smallest sustainable step you can commit to when starting your 2-3 practices?
4) Never Miss Twice
At the end of the day, you are creating new habits and the number one rule for habit building is to NEVER miss twice.
People tend to be all or nothing when it comes to creating habits, so when we miss a day we just toss the baby out with the bathwater and give up.
This is so unnecessary. Who cares if you miss a day? Just start the next.

My Morning Routine
While the best morning routine for you may be different than mine. Here’s what my mornings look like:
1) Wake up at 6:30am
Consistency is QUEEN when it comes to sleeping better. So I go to bed at 10:30pm and I get up at 6:30am, which gives me an 8-hour sleep opportunity.
2) Cold Shower
I love finishing my normal shower with 12 deep belly breaths under freezing cold water. While that may sound terrifying, the benefits of cold therapy have been well researched. It takes mental stamina to do this every day, even when you don’t want to, and I just love starting my day with a win.
3) Make the Bed
Next, I make my bed. Now that’s two things I don’t particularly LOVE doing accomplished within 20min of waking up. This is BOSS level stuff! I love starting my days on this winning streak. Plus, I love getting into a nicely made bed at night.
4) Movement
I want more energy for my days (and I plan to be at LEAST 120 years young), so movement is an important part of my mornings. This can be weightlifting, somatic movement, or even some dancing to get my blood flowing.
5) Meditate
After I move my body, I sit down and meditate for 10-20min. This is 100% non-negotiable and I have not missed a day since November 2019, proof that you can make a commitment to yourself and keep it, no matter how “busy” you perceive yourself to be.
6) Breakfast & Planning
After mediation, I fuel my body with protein and a small cup of coffee while I read my Life Vision and plan out my day. (Caffeine is best consumed 90min after you wake up to allow your cortisol levels to level out).
There is a relaxed and effortless flow to my days.

Conclusion
What is the best morning routine for busy entrepreneurs? The one that they design for themselves. There just is no one-size-fits-all approach to mornings. Not only that, but your routine will change and evolve depending on what you have going on in your life, and that is okay.
Morning routines ARE beneficial though, no matter what time you decide to wake up. Knowing your morning objectives, starting your day in control of your energy, and getting some wins in early will set you up for success.
